A Little Bit of History…… THE TITHE BARN - Little Hormead c.1900

A Tithe Barn is a barn that was used to hold ‘tithes’ paid in kind to the church during the Middle Ages. This picture depicts the Glebe Barn (originally called The Tithe Barn) when no longer a chapel but showing the ecclesiastical type windows installed during its conversion.

The Glebe Barn is located in Little Hormead, an enchanting East Hertfordshire hamlet surrounded by gently undulating and unspoilt countryside. The original tithe barn originates back to the 15 Century and was converted to become a catholic chapel by the London architect, Charles Spooner in the early 1900s. The character of the old building was preserved as far as possible with the thatch, roof posts and timbers strengthened and some new windows added.

The building was divided into two fairly equal parts, the chapel and the presbytery, separated by a sacristy. The presbytery provided accommodation for the resident priest, Father A N Morgan, who was the designated incumbent for the newly created Catholic parish of Buntingford. The entire cost was borne by Lady Gifford who had purchased the Glebe House, and who also financed Father Morgan as her Chaplain. The first Mass was said there on August 27th 1914. After serving the local population as a place of worship the Glebe Barn then served the local community as a place of education by becoming a village school.

The Glebe Barn has since been sensitively converted and is now a loving family home occupied by Holly Mulheron and her family. It is a special place with a spiritual atmosphere and ideally suited to social and retreat style gatherings where others too can benefit from this wonderful character filled building that has served so many for hundreds of years.
